Scoliosis: monitoring, comfort and knowing when to refer
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. Chiropractic care does not straighten a structural curve. What care can do is address comfort and movement, monitor changes, and make sure a growing adolescent gets a specialist opinion at the right time.
Who this page is for
Adolescents whose curve has been noticed at school or by a parent, and adults living with a known curve.
Why people come in
These are reasons patients give for booking. They are not a diagnosis, and only an examination can tell you what is happening in your case.
- Uneven shoulders, waist or shoulder blades
- Clothing that hangs unevenly
- Back discomfort after standing or sitting for long periods
- A curve noticed at a school or sports screening
How the evaluation works
We assess posture, movement and symmetry, and refer for imaging or specialist opinion when findings or growth stage indicate it.
How we may approach care
Care focuses on comfort, mobility and strength around the curve. We are explicit that this is not curve correction, and adolescents with progressing curves are referred for specialist management.
What a first visit may involve
Bring any previous imaging or specialist letters. Expect an examination and a frank explanation of what care can and cannot address.
Safety and when to seek other care
Rapid curve progression during growth, pain at night, neurological symptoms, or a curve first appearing with pain requires medical or specialist assessment.
Questions patients ask
Can chiropractic care straighten scoliosis?
No. Care addresses comfort, movement and monitoring, not correction of a structural curve.
Does my child need a specialist?
Curves in a growing child are monitored and referred when indicated. We will tell you when that applies.
